NEW LINE CINEMA ACQUIRES FEATURE FILM RIGHTS TO
AWARD-WINNING VIDEO GAME GEARS OF WAR
Stuart Beattie (Pirates Of The Caribbean) Tapped To Pen
Film Adaptation Of The Popular Video Game
LOS ANGELES (March 20, 2007) – New Line Cinema has acquired the feature film rights to Epic Games’ award-winning video game, Gears of War, with writer Stuart Beattie attached to adapt the project and Temple Hill Entertainment set to produce. The announcement was made jointly today by New Line Production President Toby Emmerich and Epic Games’ VP and co-founder Mark Rein.
Since its debut in November 2006, Gears of War has broken sales records on the Microsoft Xbox 360, selling more than 3 million copies worldwide, and has received numerous awards including Gamespot’s “Game of the Year” and the Interactive Achievement Awards’ “Overall Game of the Year.” The game thrusts players into humankind’s epic battle for survival against the Locust Horde, a nightmarish race of creatures that surface from the bowels of the planet. The story unfolds as a ragtag group of soldiers use every last ounce of strength to survive the onslaught from the forces of evil, which begins on the historic Emergence Day.
Beattie previously penned Collateral, and is credited with the screen story for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. He has also written the screenplay for 30 Days Of Night and 3:10 To Yuma, a film staring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale. Cliff Bleszinski, the lead game designer for “Gears of Wars” worked in conjunction with Beattie to define a treatment for the film, which will target existing fans of the video game and captivate a whole new audience. Bleszinski will executive produce the film on behalf of Epic Games.
Gears of War is being produced by Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey (iRobot, Daddy Day Care) through their Temple Hill Entertainment production company. The project is being overseen for New Line by production executives Cale Boyter and Jeff Katz.
Creative Artists Agency represents Beattie, Bleszinski, and Epic Games. Beattie is also represented by Joan Vento-Hall of the Law Offices of Joan Vento-Hall.

I just read this last night and me and my bandmates freaked out. But we saw an IGN speculative article on cast members and needless to say they could have made better choices for the larger than life characters that would be played. I wonder if they will go with a story similar to the game or if they will play on some of the backstory.

Hello, i looked at the character choices for the movie on IGN, and they suck. I, who have played the game and is a beast i may add, lol, must say who i think should be the real characters. For Marcus, i think Vin Diesal would be WAY better the Bruce Willis. He would ruin the movie. For Dom, Clive OWen, i just think they have better simularities then that other dude. For Kim, i dont no. For Cole, Micheal Clarke Duncan, he is way bigger and more beastly and BA then that other dude. He sorta looks like Cole also. For Baird, i think Cole Hauser would be way better than that fruit cup from LAs Vegas. I cant take him serouisly as a military soldier. But Cole Hauser has had experiance with military movies in Tears of the Sun for example and would make a way better BA and Captain, well x captain like baird. SO PLEASE READ THIS AND THINK, BELIEVE ME I WANT THIS MOVIE TO BE AWSOME. AND I THINK THAT MY CHARACTER CHOICE IS KEY!!!!

Will, dude Cole Hauser cool. Diesel sucks though and how u gonna have a white englishman like Clive Owen play a latin guy like Dom. What matters is having good actors that can portray the character well. I think Ryan Reynolds or Machonahey would b good Bairds but like u said Cole hauser is way better than Mr. Vegas

July 29th, 2007 at 4:48 am

Okay, here’s our interpretation of (possibly) future cast members:
Marcus: Javier Bardem (with a little fix to the hair and a bandana, you have your Marcus)
Dom: I dunno.
Cole: A conflict between Michael Clarke Duncan and Lester Speight
Baird: Jason Bateman (you have to admit, blonde hair * Jason equals live action Baird)
Carmine: Jim Carrey (with a helmet on, who’ll know?)
Kim: Chow Yun Fat (with bald cap)
Colonel Hoffman: Clint Fuckin’ Eastwood
Franklin: Chris Rock
